About Ghalcha
Ghalcha, also referred to as Kalas, is a nepali water vessel which is a miniature version of Gagri; which is a Nepali water storing vessel, which is used analogously as a bucket is used for storing & transporting small quantities of water. Nepal, being a country of rivers, dependent on ground water wells and sources that pour out ground water, Gagri was primarily used to draw water from the sources and store it for household usage. Along with it's everyday usages, it is used as a gift in marriages.
Modern Day Usage
Today, with the advent of usage of buckets and similar water vessels, Gagri is still used as a decoration item. A pair of gagris are placed on the two sides of doors. In this sense, Gagris are depicted as a sign of welcome to those who enter through the door. The miniature version of Gagri is known as Ghalcha.
The prime usage of Ghalcha is similar to it's larger counterpart gagri. It is used as similar to gagris, by placing it on the either side of door, but the door size being small and size of ghalchas in proportional to the door. Not only in either side of doors, it can be placed on the racks, cupboard as a decoration item or it also can be used as a flower vase, placing flowers on the outside.
