this is very beautiful very old tibetan hand painted Vajrayogini thanka. . size :- 22 inch / 16 inch. Thanka is derived from Tibetan word 'Than yin'which means scroll paintings or religious record. Newaris called it Paubha which also means the same. Thanka are used in Monastery for prayer and worship as well as to decorate the walls of prayer rooms. It consists of mainly three subjects. The first different mudras of Buddha, secondly different gods and goddesses and deities, and thirdly different Mandalas. All these three subject matters of thanka depict one thing that is meditation and spirituality. Therefore these Thankas should be decorated on your prayer room or meditation room walls. Most Thankas are mounted on beautiful silk brocade frames with role up rods. Thankas are painted on special kind of paper cotton or silk. They are stretched on a wooden frame and painted. It take days and months to paint a thanka. To get bleach whiteness for its background limestone is rubbed on the canvas. Then water soluble natural color is used to paint it. One of the main feature of thanka is water soluble gold color. All gold color is painted with this solution. Only a Newari merchant can prepare this gold powder. However he learned it from Tibetans. But no Tibetans can prepare it now. The cost of a Thanka depends on its size, detail, time taken to paint, the artist newars or lamas, time when it was painted, and the amount of gold powder used.
